Working from home has become the new normal for employees all over the world. Covid-19 has led millions of workers to make this shift for several months now, and some companies, such as Twitter, have decided to make this permanent. This transition is a difficult adjustment for many, especially with the uncertainty it brings, but, it is one that we can get through together.
We’ve collected a few strategies to adopt when switching to working from home. These habits are not just for the victims of the Covid-19, though! Whether you’re self-employed, telecommuting, or freelancing, these tips will help you stay productive (and sane) while working from the safety of your home.
- Create A Designated Work Space
Although it can be so tempting to work from your cozy bed, isolate yourself from the distractions of your home life. This separation can change your state of mind, allowing you to consciously know that you are in this space to work. Closing the door will signal to your family (and to yourself) that you are focused and busy with work. This doesn’t need to be a whole room; whether it’s a desk, a corner, or even half your kitchen table, a designated work space is valuable to increase productivity while working from home.
- Stick to a Schedule
Your daily schedule may require a bit more structure now that you are home. Without the flow of a regular work day to give you some sort of structure, you will need to be proactive to ensure you are still getting things done. First of all, work typical hours – this will help maintain communication with co-workers, clients, and managers. Be on top of your game by creating alarms, reminders, and personal events on your calendar. Challenge yourself by setting more goals as usual!
- Take Mental Breaks
Be sure not to lock yourself in a room all day! Taking short breaks can actually be an essential part of staying productive and producing high quality work while working from home. Take a walk, stretch, do yoga, medidate, call a friend, step outside – anything to give your mind time to relax!
- Keep Socializing
Just because you’re physically apart, doesn’t mean you need to stop connecting! There are so many video platforms like Zoom, BlueJeans, GoogleChat, and Microsoft Teams that make virtual meetings possible while working from home! Be social too! Social interactions alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness, and sometimes, those chatty co-workers of yours can actually make the day fly by. Find a colleague to make your accountability partner to make sure you are both getting work done. Support each other – you’re going through this experience together!
- Act As If You Are Going To Work
Structure your work day by pretending you’re going to work – because you are! Keeping your regular routine can help maintain a work life balance. Set an alarm, shower, eat breakfast, and do the things that you would normally do to get ready in the mornings. Even getting out of your pajamas would be a huge step towards a productive day.
Although working from home may not have been the original plan, we’re hoping these tips help you make the most of it. It may take a while to get used to this new work lifestyle, so remember to give yourself credit during these difficult times and to have faith in your ability to adapt.
