How to Fix Your SEO Ranking in 2016

  1. Disavow bad backlinks.

Back in the day, people figured out that Google rewarded sites that had high numbers of backlinks. This leads to massive amounts of linkspam in the form of press releases, directories and comment spam. Google, as a result, began penalizing sites with too many links from bad neighborhoods. You can use Google’s Disavow Link Tool to let the search engine know that you don’t want to be associated with those sites.

  1. Address penalties if you get them.

Seeing a note in your Webmaster Tools about a penalty can be demoralizing and a little intimidating. But, it’s not always your fault. Sometimes a spammy site will decide to link to you or you can find that you have an issue with duplicate content or another on-site error. If these problems aren’t addressed, they can make your site just about invisible in the SERPs.

  1. Use H1 and H2 tags well.

These tags don’t just break up content for the reader. They tell search engines what your pages are about. Generally, you should have just one H1 tag per page and H2 tags as needed to define sections. Make these tags keyword rich and descriptive.

  1. Don’t forget local SEO.

If you have brick and mortar locations or deal with customers in a specific geographic area, do not underestimate the power of quality local SEO. Make sure your name, address and phone number (collectively referred to as NAP) are consistent across your website, social media pages and local directory listings. Submit your business to Google Places, Yelp and other services.
